Since this book was the grand finale of phase two it definitely had a lot going on with it which I actually thought was really cool. Now I will say this for the book: it was very ambitious. One for what I liked and one for what I disliked. So instead of doing just one review I've decided to split it into a two-part review. So I finished the book about five days ago and since then I've been really trying to condense my thoughts for this book into a relatively short review but it's kinda hard to do that as there's just so much to say for it. However, I suspect that the authors will not be allowed long to rest on their laurels, and before the end of the decade, we will likely need a new version called Many More Gene Manipulations in Fungi.įrom the reviews of Gene Manipulations in Fungi, 1986. Its principles are relevant and useful to the direction of fungal genetic research in the 1990s. This book has been very good at capturing a snapshot of the potential for molecular studies in fungi. The book is well organized, well balanced, and well written.Indeed, biologists of many persuasions, whether they be interested in regulation of cell cycle, pathogenicity, growth, development, meiosis, sex, reproduction, or death, could learn much of significance by reading this latest volume of gene manipulation in fungi. SOCIETY FOR GENERAL MICROBIOLOGY QUARTERLY It continues the style of the earlier volume, with well-chosen authorities writing on important topics at a depth adequate for the bench researcher. This is a book for every fungal genetics laboratory. This is the second volume of what is rapidly becoming the standard reference work for fungal molecular geneticists. Abrams’ imagination went to work on the concept of what would become S., and he later connected with award-winning author Doug Dorst, who accepted the challenge of fleshing out the idea. It had a note inside informing the finder to read the book, and then leave it for someone else. when he found an abandoned novel at the airport. And as it turns out, that’s the point.Ībrams came up with the idea for S. It’s a brilliant design move: You must make a conscious physical action to enter the book. The slipcover has a beautiful, odd, heavy seal, and it must be broken to get in. In S., you literally discover a book within a book-a black slipcover branded with the title houses what looks to be a linen-covered vintage tome bearing a Dewey-Decimal call number. It really is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. It seems like a cheap trick-until you hold a copy of S. Abramsīlurbs aren’t meant to be given by a book’s own authors-especially when one of those authors is, in this case, a major Hollywood creative known more for directing and producing his series (Lost) and films (Cloverfield, Super 8, Star Trek) than his strictly writerly endeavors (say, that script for Armageddon). Frankly, I’m amazed it was even possible to do this project at all.” -J.J. might seem odd, over-the-top, a lazy misuse of celebrity: At first, the quote at the top of the press release for the book The story of Oedipus and Jocasta is told in Sophocles' other two 'Theban' plays (mentioned above). Antigone, Ismene, Polyneices, and Eteocles are the adult children of the accidentally incestuous marriage of Oedipus and his mother Jocasta. At least you'll get a sense of what the various translations are like and if you are a high school English teacher this might even be a helpful posting.įirst though, it is probably worth just giving a thumbnail sketch of the plot of the play. As is to be expected, each had strengths and weaknesses. I thought it might be interesting to briefly compare and contrast the four very different translations that I read. Antigone is thought to have been written around 441 BCE. I have just finished reading four different translations of Sophocles' classic tragedy Antigone, which was chronologically the first of his three great 'Theban Plays.' The other two, in the order written, include, Oedipus the King and Oedipus at Colonus. More than who I was, voters of all ages and all races wanted to know what I would do. “We found that my personal story and identity alone could not woo voters, especially black women. . . (“I intentionally worked to build a robust understanding of international complexities,” she writes, a bit dutifully.) And though she embraces identity politics in a straightforward way - Americans should be able to pick “between more than two heterosexual white men,” she writes - Abrams knows it is only the beginning, not the end, of her pitch. Abrams also devotes a chapter to international affairs, lest she be pegged as a foreign policy lightweight. She stresses her success with Latino, Asian and African American voters, but also emphasizes how white suburban women and college-educated white Americans overall were energized by her campaign. In her book, she nationalizes the implications of her Georgia campaign, lingering on her ability to attract all kinds of voters, unlikely or otherwise. A recognized expert on fair voting and civic engagement, Abrams chronicles a chilling account of how the right to vote and the principle of democracy have been. Abrams has been upfront about her desire to become Joe Biden’s pick as the party’s vice-presidential nominee this year.
